With the stationary high parked over New Zealand for the past week the women were always in for a light wind regatta.
This was the first time the new fleet of Platu 25s were used for the Women’s Nationals and with a smaller number of crew it made it much easier to assemble a competent crew.
Favourites going in the regatta were Jessica Smyth (current Women’s Match Racing Champion) and Jan Dawson who had won the last two Women’s Keelboat Nationals. This year there were also three international teams from Australia.
Racing was postponed on Saturday until the breeze settled and for the remainder on the day the sailors enjoyed a light easterly breeze with lots of sunshine. Racing at the front of the fleet was very close with only metres separating the front runners in most of the six races held. Fendall Halliburton the race officer made the most of the last day of daylight sailing and it was early evening when the women finally tied up at the marina.
Sunday dawned and with an extra hours sleep the women were ready for another days racing. A further 4 races were held to complete the series.
The overall winner was Jessica Smyth, with Jan Dawson second and Robin Hilton third. Racing was always very close with top four boats all enjoying winning at least two races each.
The Platu’s were a popular choice and excelled in the conditions over the weekend.
