After two very competitive races the Greek crew of “Modus Vivendi – 3 Alfa” owned by Kostas Karageorgiou, with Takis Mantis at the helm, leads the provisional ranking list of the Platu 25 World Championship in Alicante. The Greeks were among the favourites: they were 2008 Platu 25 World Champions in Eraklion (Greece) and seconds in 2009 in Punta Ala Italy). And today, after a first place in the first race and a third in the second race, they got the provisional leadership, showing to be in a top form.
The second place of the podium is for the Spanish crew of “Carpantxo”with the 2-time IMS670 world champion Jesus Pintos helming, while Paco Sánchez is calling tactics, followed in third by an Italian boat: the “Euz II-Monellavabo” Francesco Lanera's .
The Platu 25 fleet - sixty six boats coming from eleven different Countries - started racing today at 13.10 after a general recall and a postponement flag. The start was given under black flag with most of the fleet opting for the Committee boat end where it looked like the wind was a bit stronger.
The Greek team “Modus Vivendi-3Alfa” immediately took the lead followed close by the Italians on “Euz II-Monella Vagabonda” and the Germand crew of Flexi helmed by Ganssaunge putting pressure on Karageorgiou's team. A bit further behind two Spanish boats: “Matahambre” skippered by Alfonso Bonilla from Andalucia and “Carpantxo“. Just after the first downwind mark the Committee decided for a course change since the wind shifted from 120º to 100º, yet not decreasing in intensity.
The leading pack changed very little in the following legs and the opening race of the Worlds was then won by the Greeks while second were the Galician crew on “Carpantxo” and third “Flexi“, confirming their role of favourites. One of the most accredited Spanish team “Mexillón de Galicia-Movistar” owned by the Paz brothers had a very good last leg and finished sixth on the line.
The second race started at 15.00, still with a gentle breeze of seven knots from 120°. Nearly all the boats opted for the boat end of the starting line with a good early lead by The “Collection Coppel Dental” followed once again “Modus Vivendi-3Alfa“. At the first upwind mark both boats maintained their positions while on the following legs it was “Bou” from Catalunia to take the second place and Alfredo Mella's team fought back to the first one up to the finish line where they were followed by “Modus Vivendi-3Alfa“; “Carpantxo” and “Euz II-Monella Vagabonda“.
So, with yesterday's results the scoreboard is lead by “Modus Vivendi-3Alfa” followed by Taranto - at just four points of distance-and by Euz II-Monella Vagabonda“. The Greek of “Modus Vivendi“ seem to be ready for maintaining the promise they made last year in Punta Ala when they conquered the silver, standing as candidates for the podium in 2010. Now, with a first and a third place they confirm to have the talent and the capacity to contrast the “Invincible Armada Espanola” .
